Even with the penalty, this play should open some eyes . . .

Even though the play didn’t count due to off-setting penalties, it was still noteworthy.

In the first quarter of the Jets-Commanders preseason game on Saturday, Jets defensive end Will McDonald beat Washington left tackle Mason Brooks with an inside move and hit quarterback Jeff Driskel as he threw.

McDonald was called for roughing the passer, but who cares? Most roughing-the-passer calls in the NFL are frivolous and bogus.

I’m not saying penalties are okay, but so many times with roughing the passer calls you are like, “What did you want the defender to do?”

So I rarely criticize defenders for roughing the passer penalties.

But to see McDonald torch the tackle like this, regardless of the penalty, had to excite Jets’ Nation.

His first-step quickness off the snap continues to be impressive.
