Former Titan on how to defend Cam Ward

Jets nickelback Jarvis Brownlee came to the team in a trade with the Tennessee Titans last season.

Before being traded to the Jets on September 23, 2025, Brownlee faced Tennessee QB Cam Ward in spring practices, training camp, and then in practice for a couple of weeks early last season.

So he knows a lot about the challenges the Titans QB presents.

“He’s a young cat, but he brings a lot to the table,” Brownlee told Jets Confidential. “He’s a great competitor who don’t back down from the challenge.”

Brownlee feels the Jets defense needs to be hyper-focused on Ward’s ability to “get out of the pocket.”

“We need to plaster and make sure we keep our eyes on our guys because he does a great job of extending plays out of the pocket,” Brownlee said. “We need to really plaster and lock in on our guys.”

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, who is also the team’s de facto defensive coordinator, has been emphasizing this point as well.

“[Ward] has more athleticism than I think people give him credit for also,’ Glenn said. “That’s something we have to look at, especially when he starts to move around and starts making these off-platform throws, because he does a really good job of that.”

So the Jets need to try to trap Ward in the pocket as much as possible, and not rush past him.
