The Las Vegas Raiders have a new coach – Klink Kubiak.
Man, is he boring with the media.
He says very little. That is the way to go, man.
This might seem a strange thing for a reporter to say, because the media lives for content, but this is actually a pragmatic approach.
Headline – “Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey Prepare to ‘Change the Narrative'”
My first reaction to seeing this headline was – “Don’t talk about changing the narrative, just roll up your sleeves and do it.”
Here is the quote that created the headline. It Aaron Glenn talking about learning from last year, a tough one for the Jets.
“At some point you have to bury it, but you also never forget,” Glenn said. “Last year was a tough season, and I know that. The coaching staff knows that; the players know that. So, it’s our job to change the narrative, and the only way you change that narrative is by winning.”
Some would argue that “changing narratives” isn’t something that you should even worry about.
Just worry about process thinking.
Process thinking is something Nick Saban made popular in the football world, and it is the best approach.
Process Thinking –Â “Focusing on the steps and actions needed to achieve a goal, rather than the outcome.”
Saban won seven national championships in college football.
“Don’t think about winning the SEC Championship,” Saban said while at Alabama. “Don’t think about the national championship. Think about what you need to do in this drill, on this play, in this moment.”
So in other words, don’t worry about changing narratives, worry about the next meeting, the next weight training session, the next rep at practice, and so forth.
Glenn is a good man who is giving it his best shot, but one thing that could help him is some media training, like most public figures get. Very common.
Early on his stint as Buffalo Bills coach, Sean McDermott wasn’t great with the press, but he got much better, with some strategic guidance.
Like a lot of public figures get. A lot.
Just don’t know what purpose it serves to talk about “changing the narrative.”
Just do it.
As Elvis sang, “A little less conversation, a little more action.”
Look, I’m not picking on Glenn – helpful advice isn’t picking on somebody.
The Jets’ 2025 season was an utter disaster.
And Glenn and Mougey are working their tails off to try to fix it.
Glenn hiring Frank Reich as offensive coordinator was a brilliant move.
The Jets trading Jermaine Johnson for massive run-stopping T’Vondre Sweat makes a ton of sense, especially with Glenn hiring Karl Dunbar as defensive line coach. The 6-4, 366-pound Sweat sometimes needs a kick in the butt to keep the motor running, and Big Karl will be great for Sweat.
Four picks in the top 44, Glenn and Mougey have a chance to land four starters – they are working tirelessly now with the scouts to knock these picks out of the park.
But something else that needs to improve this off-season, along with the team on the field, is the messaging in press conferences.
The “superpower” comment earlier this week didn’t go over that well.
And worrying about “changing narratives” is one of the last things a coach should worry about.
Bring in a media consultant, just like Presidents, Senators, Congressmen, Governors, CEOs.
They all do it.
Go for it.
Nothing to lose.
