Talking about Zach Wilson’s personnel QB coach John Beck, and Wilson’s coaches with the Jets. During the bye-week, Wilson spent some time with Beck.
This needs to be handled a certain way. The messaging needs to be consistent. Beck can’t be telling him one thing, and the Jets coaches, like Mike LaFleur, something else.
Obviously, basic teaching points at the quarterback position are the same everywhere, but not every QB guru is going to have the same exact messaging across the board.
I asked Wilson on Thursday about the dynamic that exists between Beck and the Jets’ coaches. Here is that question and answer:
Dan Leberfeld, Jets Confidential: When you go to work with John Beck, does he communicate with Mike LaFleur and Rob Calabrese and Matt Cavanaugh as far as a plan for what you need to work on, since he is your private quarterback coach, but he doesn’t work for the Jets?
Wilson: Yes, absolutely, and I think that’s what’s cool. John was part of this system back when he played. He’s familiar with these guys. He’s obviously close with our staff as well. They’re in communication all the time and John hears my point of view, he hears the coaches’ point of view, so he has a good feel for what things we should work on when we get together and I think that’s what makes it so cool.
Interesting anecdote. When NFL Europe was around, Bill Parcells didn’t like sending players there because he didn’t want other coaches teaching them differently than his staff.
Not saying Beck is doing that, but just pointing out that high-level communication between Beck and LaFleur, Calabrese and Cavanaugh must be there . . .
As mentioned yesterday, look for the Jets to try and exploit the Patriots’ right tackle, no matter who comes up on the roulette wheel to play the position.
The reason they have issues over there is that Trent Brown is on IR with a calf injury. The last three years he’s had issues staying healthy, two with the Raiders and now with New England.
Browns is currently the heaviest player in the NFL at 380 pounds, and that might have something to do with his inability to stay healthy. Being 380 puts a lot of stress on your muscles, bones and ligaments, and perhaps contributed to his current calf injury.
While he’s not listed at 380, Brock Huard of Fox Sports, said during the Jets’ loss to Seattle last year, that Mekhi Becton was 380 at the end of last season.
So if that is accurate, he would have been tied with Brown for the heaviest player in the league.
Like Brown, Becton has had issues staying healthy. Granted his current injury had nothing to do with weight. He got rolled and hurt his knee against Carolina in the opener, but the foot injury that kept him out of the spring, maybe that was connected to the weight.
The point here is simple, whether it’s Brown or Becton, getting down to perhaps 330-40 might help their health a little (and they would still be huge and powerful). It can’t hurt.
