A few things to get into tonight:
The following information is hurting Adam Gase:
ESPN: “With Ryan Tannehill starting at quarterback, the Titans are 11-3 (.714) and have averaged 30.4 points per game. That’s the best win percentage (minimum 10 starts) and most team points per game for a Titans/Oilers QB since the 1970 merger.” . . .
Headline – “Jets, Joe Douglas need to stop Adam Gase from ruining this franchise even more after Le’Veon Bell mess.”
Joe Douglas has no power to do this. That needs to change, but right now, he’s an equal to Gase.
I know I’m becoming a parrot on this topic, but the Jets only way out of this mess is make Joe Douglas the football czar and the boss of the coaches, not just the head coach, but the defensive coordinator and so forth.
Clearly the head coach and defensive coordinator of this team are operating on separate islands right now, and you can’t win that way..
Everybody needs to be singing from the same hymn sheet.
And to force a defensive coordinator and his son on a new head coach made no sense. And to force an outside linebacker coach on the defensive coordinator, after that outside linebacker coach testified against the defensive coordinator in an NFL investigation, mades no sense.
Now, in fairness to Douglas, it’s probably the best case scenario for him, if the owner makes the coaching change, if he’s so inclined, before elevating Douglas to the football czar role.
If the Jets make a coaching change, Douglas needs to be left alone to lead the search and make the choice. There must be no business executives involved – it’s not in their wheelhouse to pick coaches.
And if Douglas picks the new coach, if they make a change, he needs to do it in his new role as football czar.
You can’t have somebody interview coaching candidates, pick the coach, and then revert back to the old power structure, where the coach and GM are equals.
Why would you be empowered to pick your equal? That makes little to no sense.
That is what the Jets did with Mike Maccagnan and Adam Gase.
Maccagnan was involved in the interview, was involved with picking Gase, and then, after that process was done, it was back to the old corporate structure that hasn’t been working – President. GM, coach all equals and report to the owner.
And the thing about Joe, is while a potential new coach would be under him if he’s the czar, he’s not going to be a jerk with his power and micromanage the coach. He will let the coach coach, but every now and then, if there are issues, Joe can jump in, but he’s not going to be breathing down the neck of the coach everyday.
But this is absolutely the only Jets way out of this mess is with Big Joe leading the way as the football boss.
And if the Jets make a coaching change, and Joe hits the hire out of the park, with all the draft picks the next couple of years, and some good free agent moves, without the reckless spending of the last regime, this could turn around fairly fast.
It doesn’t take that long in the NFL in you play your cards right. Look at the Cleveland Browns this year.
But putting Joe in total control, with the business people, lawyers and money-managers getting out of the way, is the only way to get this done.
