It’s funny how things
are these days with people on social media looking to seek and destroy all the time.
Eddy PiƱeiro went 3-3 on his field goals in his Jets’ debut last week against New Orleans, but got criticized by some fans for all his kicks having low trajectories.
To those fans ripping him on Twitter, he did it on purpose to deal with the heavy wind gusts. Sometimes Twitter isn’t exactly a Mensa meeting.
Cool game for PiƱeiro this week going home to Miami. His father,Ā Eddy PiƱeiro Sr. came to Miami from Cuba during the 1980 Mariel boatlift.Ā Eddy PiƱeiro Jr. went to Miami Sunset High School in Kendall. He will have 150 friends and family at the game . . .
Woody Johnson tweets about what uniform combination his team will wear each week, and this has led to some harsh responses from fans of Twitter, especially this week with the team currently at 3-10.
“Woody how about worrying about the lousy team and not the uniforms. Like lipstick on a pig. As Al Davis used to say ājust win baby.” – Arnold Spier.
“Who cares? Play good football.” – Paul Parisi
Some PR experts might suggest that the owner, and his rank-and-file, avoid social media coming down the homestretch of a tough season, that has quite a few fans dismayed. Some PR types might disagree and say it’s okay to tweet about things like uniforms.
As Nick Saban said, “Everyone looks at the world through a different set of eyes.” . . .
The Dolphins coming off a bye week and playing at home, and the Jets playing a game last week, and having to travel this week, perhaps gives Miami an edge this week physically. Not making excuses, and the Dolphins would be favored in the game no matter what, but this is kind of double-whammy for the Jets from a schedule standpoint . . .
Robert Saleh made a very good point today about Zach Wilson’s development landscape this year. While he’s struggling, he’s not getting beat up. Yes, he’s getting sacked or hit at times but it hasn’t been that bad. You think about all the first-round quarterbacks going to rebuilding teams, and they sometimes take a terrible beating behind a bad line. Archie Manning with the New Orleans Saints comes to mind. Manning got beat up terribly early in his career, and it probably impacted his career – mentally and physically. David Carr in Houston is another example. The Jets don’t have a bad line. Wilson isn’t getting that beat up . . .
Speaking of the offensive line, that line will likely be without left tackle George Fant this week. He is dealing with aĀ knee issue and didn’t practice all week. And Mekhi Becton (knee) isn’t ready to come back yet, so Conor McDermott will be the left tackle.
McDermott also had a knee issue this season, and is wearing a brace. He suffered a knee injury against Green Bay in the preseason. At first it looked like a season-ender when he was carted off at Lambeau Field, but it turned out to be a two-month injury, and he returned in early November. McDermott was another good 2019 waiver claim by Joe Douglas early in his tenure, along with guys like John Franklin-Myers, Braxton Berrios and Mike White.
Is McDermott an elite left tackle? Perhaps not and he’s probably better served on the right side, but he’s a serviceable left tackle who can get you through a few games. The 6-8, 310-pound UCLA product is pretty light on his feet . . .
I asked Saleh about the player rules becoming stricter at the training complex with more positive COVID-19 results around the league
“Weāre back to 2020, in terms of staying away from indoor dining, go outdoor and all that stuff,” said Saleh. “Obviously, just stay away from concerts and bars and nightclubs and all that stuff.”
And what about the road hotel in South Florida?
“Same as 2020,” Saleh said. “So no visitors, no leaving the hotel.”
With so many players having Florida roots, no visitors at the team hotel is a bummer for them. At road hotels, you usually see a lot of family of the local players visiting, and often going out to dinner with the player. No more of that this season.
