Some continue to harp on the importance of “building a foundation” when discussing the team’s struggles.
Perhaps that narrative is working with the team’s brass, but that has nothing to do with how the game management was handled at the end of each half in London, or not inserting Tyrod Taylor into the lineup last week to replace a struggling Justin Fields to try to win a close game.
If Woody, Christopher, Ira and Hymie are buying into “it takes time” for the struggles, they should ask themselves, “Why are first-year programs like New England, Chicago and Jacksonville, and even Las Vegas winning games, while also building a foundation, and we aren’t?”
Talking about “building a foundation” and “it takes time” and attaching that to the team’s 0-6 record is a dubious argument.
But if the team’s brass is okay with that, it really doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks. NFL teams are not democracies. If Woody, Christopher, Ira, and Hymie are buying that line of thinking, that is really all that matters.
I’m not saying they are okay with it. We don’t have access to Woody, Christopher, Ira, and Hymie right now, so it’s hard to say.
There are other reasons the Jets are 0-6 that have nothing to do with “building a foundation” and “it takes time.”
Like deciding to go with a QB, who is now 14-35 as a starter, who is probably best suited to an NFL backup role, do to his proclivity to hold the ball too long, and often deliver the ball late.
So much was made about the nine sacks last week, but what about the two inaccurate out-routes to Garrett Wilson, that should have been completions, but weren’t accurate throws?
Kurt Warner pointed this out:
On an incomplete out route on the Jets’ fourth series:
“The ball just too far outside – missed opportunity for Justin Fields,” Warner said.
On an incompletion on third-and-8 in the third quarter, Warner felt the ball was thrown late – “The ball has to be out before he breaks.” CB Pat Surtain broke up this pass.
Game management, QB decisions, going with linebackers who aren’t good in pass coverage, and rotational ends who belong on the practice squad, there are a lot of reasons beyond “it takes time” and “we are building a foundation” for the Jets’ 0-6 record.
Why are the Chicago Bears 3-2 and the Jets are 0-6? Is Caleb Williams better than Fields? Who was saying that entering the season? . . .
Speaking of Woody Johnson, I have not seen him at a lot of practices recently.
Not saying you should read into that in any way, just making an observation.
He reportedly lives in Florida, so that might have more to do with it than anything else . . .
Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 33-31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football.
He now has 14 touchdowns in six games.
My position was always simple, and this isn’t Monday Morning Quarterbacking. You can go back and check it. Rodgers was under contract to the Jets in 2025. The Jets should have kept him, and drafted a QB of the future to train. The Steelers signed Rodgers and picked Ohio State QB Will Howard.
It’s a QB-driven league.
Forget about supposed personality concerns (though he was loved in the Jets locker room). Be selfish, keep him around, and if he retires, he retires.
You don’t let a true QB answer out of the building, even if he’s only going to play another year or two.
So now the Jets have a guy who is perhaps easier to get along with, supposedly better for their cultural reboot, but they are 0-6.
What good is that?
In this league, it’s all about the QB, and if you don’t have a true answer, you are up the creek without a paddle.
Fields, who is a wonderful person, and gives you all he’s got, seems better suited for a #2 QB, much like former Jets QB Zach Wilson, and there is nothing with that. Those are good jobs if you can get them . . .
With Garrett Wilson likely out, expect a big role for rookie speedster Arian Smith today.
After six weeks in a back role, he seems ready for a bigger role now, now more comfortable with the playbook and route-tree, which he admitted are both more complicated than college. He told JC his route-tree with the Jets is double what it was at Georgia.
