ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced today: “Sources: The NFL informed all 32 teams today in a memo that it prevailed in its grievance vs. the NFLPA and its team report cards. An arbitrator determined that the NFLPA’s conduct violated the CBA and ordered it to stop making public any future report cards.”
The Jets got bad grades in a lot of areas in this unanimous poll of players done by the union. They ranked 29th overall.
This announcement by Schefter is a win for Jets owner Woody Johnson, who last March, at the NFL Owners’ Meeting, called the survey “totally bogus.”
Here is a breakdown of the categories and the Jets’ grades:
- Treatment of Families: C- (24th)
- Food / Dining Area: C- (29th)
- Nutritionist / Dietician: B+ (13th)
- Locker Room: D+ (26th)
- Training Room: C (28th)
- Training Staff: C (29th)
- Weight Room: C+ (26th)
- Strength Coaches: B (29th)
- Team Travel: C+ (24th)
- Head Coach: B (25th)
- Ownership: F (32nd)
I agree with Johnson in many ways on this issue, especially about the facilities.
The Jets training complex in Florham Park is outstanding – state-of-the-art in many ways.
In fact, Boomer Esiason recently said that when his close friend Frank Reich toured the facilities, before taking the offensive coordinator job, he said Reich was blown away with how nice the facilities are.
So when you see bad grades for food/dining, locker room, training room and weight room, you could argue that it is just an axe to grind against the owner, that has nothing to do with the facilities.
The food is very good. How do I know? They are nice enough to serve us the same food in the press room.
As for travel, I’ve never heard one word from any sources that there are issues with their travel arrangements, the charters, hotels, buses, and so forth.
And another example of the players likely just using this survey to get back at the owner, was the coaches getting a “B”
Not sure I would have given the previous staff a “B”. Just look at the results.
As for ownership getting an “F,” it’s hard to argue with that based on the results in recent years, including missing the playoffs 15 years in a row.
In a results-based business, when you are the owner of a team that has missed the playoffs 15 years in a row, it’s hard to argue with the owner getting a bad grade.
But the issue with this survey is that all those other bad grades, in other categories regarding facilities, travel, food and so forth, brought the Jets aggregate grade way below where it should have been.
And that makes the Jets’ grade seem agenda-driven, not reality-driven.
I’m not a special pleader for the Jets, but just try to call balls and strikes.
The facilities are excellent. This isn’t the case everywhere around the league.
The grass practice fields are usually in great shape – beautifully taken care of by head groundskeeper Blake Hoerr and his staff.
I’m telling you, back in the day, back at Hofstra, the fields weren’t nearly always as flat and even as they are in Florham Park.
These fields in Florham Park prevent injuries. There is no doubt in my mind.
So while Woody is kind of low hanging fruit now with the team’s struggles, he’s right on this issue.
A lot of the ratings in last year’s survey from Jets players were bogus, and it should not be made public.
