Morris County – By all accounts, Jets WR Garrett Wilson is having a solid training camp.
But you could argue it hasn’t been a prolific camp.
He’s had several big plays, no doubt, and has looked good overall, but if there were real stat sheets in camp, he wouldn’t necessarily have eye-popping numbers.
But that isn’t a bad thing, and here is why:
Because of all the extra attention he gets from defenses, whether it’s against his own team in practice or Tampa Bay the last couple of days, that is opening up opportunities for other targets.
For instance, tight end Mason Taylor had a few big plays in the passing game today.
Throughout the summer, you have seen a lot of receptions for guys like wide receivers Adonai Mitchell and Isaiah Williams.
There is no doubt, with all the double teams and bracket coverage Wilson faces, it opens up golden opportunities for other weapons, and veteran QB Geno Smith is taking advantage of these mismatches.
Last year, before he got hurt and his season ended after seven weeks, it seemed like Wilson was being forced passes, whether he was open or not.
And you could make the argument he took a beating last year, in part, due to passes thrown into congested areas, even when Wilson wasn’t open, leading to a lot of big hits.
There is no doubt Wilson will be a huge part of the Jets’ passing offense this year, but if he’s not open, don’t force it to him.
Just throw to the open guy, which sometimes is somebody else because Wilson is double-teamed.
And so far in camp, Smith has done a good job doing this.
