In his press conference after the Jets’ 20-17 OT loss to Green Bay, QB Geno Smith was asked for positive takeaways from Gang Green’s performance.
“I don’t believe in moral victories,” Smith said. “We didn’t win the game, and that’s all that matters to me.”
He is right. This isn’t T-Ball.
You were hearing some say it was a positive that the Jets went toe-to-toe with a playoff team.
Yes, the Packers made the playoffs the last three seasons, but the team you saw out there today didn’t resemble those playoff teams.
They are too depleted to say that.
“They are in the deep end right now,” said Jacob Hester on SiriusXM NFL Radio a few days before the Jets-Packers game. “Their best players on offense (RB Josh Jacobs) and defense (DE Micah Parsons) are not in sight right now, and it’s going to be some time. Can you doggie paddle long enough to be able to swim to shore? That is something to watch from the Green Bay Packers.”
Jacobs is currently suspended, and Parsons is rehabbing a knee injury.
The Packers were also without starting DT Javon Hargrave and rotational DT Warren Brinson.
Then, on their first offensive series, they lost right tackle Zach Tom (knee) and WR Jayden Reed (neck), and shortly thereafter, left guard Aaron Banks (toe).
So, no, the Jets did not go toe-to-toe with a playoff team. They went toe-to-toe with a team that is ravaged by injuries right now that they should have beaten.
But even if the Packers were at full strength, if the Jets lost, there would still be no moral victories.
Those should not exist at the NFL level.
