East Rutherford – Jets coach Aaron Glenn didn’t seem thrilled with his team’s effort in the team’s 42-10 loss to New England on Sunday.
“I always talk about how we come out and we play with effort,” Glenn said. “Today was probably the one time I feel like our effort wasn’t as good [as] I would want it to be, and that’s just me not BS-ing you guys. Just being honest. I didn’t think the effort was where it needed to be. We have to figure that out.”
Was the effort worse today than the previous three games, losses to Miami (34-10), Jacksonville (48-20), and New Orleans (29-6)?
Probably not.
The Jets seemed to play hard today. I really didn’t see guys dogging it out there.
Blaming effort seems like a little bit of a deflection from the real issues – talent and schemes.
One constant over the Jets’ four-game losing streak is blown coverages, with opposing targets consistently flashing wide open.
Do you think blown coverages are a lack of effort, but more a lack of instincts, talent and perhaps poor X’s and O’s?
Do you really think some of these young cover guys are saying – “Screw it, I’m going to stop covering this guy – I’m going to let him make a big play?”
Highly unlikely.
Or some of these defensive linemen who consistently struggle getting off blocks. Did that start today? Drake Maye had all day to throw when the Jets lost to New England in Foxboro, just like he did today.
The Jets couldn’t take advantage of New England’s backup left tackle today, just like they couldn’t take advantage of Jacksonville’s backup left tackle two weeks ago.
Was there a lack of effort today?
Sorry, I didn’t see it.
But did see a whole lotta of other issues that led to New England’s 42-10 shellacking of the Jets, like myriad mental errors.
