This was and is a media-created story.
And Aaron Glenn made that clear today.
Talking about the speculation over the last few weeks that the Jets are looking for receiver help.
We wrote about this a couple of weeks ago, and how it’s driven by a fantasy football mindset that is pervasive with the sports media and some fans.
Weapons, weapons, weapons.
It’s all about the weapons.
Not really.
On the NFL level, quarterbacks make receivers; receivers don’t make quarterbacks.
Who were the New England Patriots’ receivers when they won their Super Bowls?
Glenn was asked today about the speculation regarding the Jets looking for a receiver
“Well I’ll let you guys do that,” Glenn said. “The speculation comes from you guys. The thing we try to do here is build our roster. We don’t let any of that information out & I’m not going to let you know right now.”
A couple of points about what Glenn said.
First of all, he’s making it clear, the idea that the Jets are looking for a receiver to complement Garrett Wilson is a narrative made up out of whole cloth.
They don’t need to do this because they have plenty of talent in the receiver room now. Secondly, if they were looking to do this, they wouldn’t let the media know?
Recently, Dianna Russini tweeted, “The Jets are among several teams monitoring the trade market for potential wide receiver additions, per sources.”
Reports like this might be coming from somewhere, but likely not from 1 Jets Drive.
And if, on a long-shot possibility, they came from 1 Jets Drive, Glenn will likely root out where it came from and fire that person.
I just think all these reports talking about the Jets going wide receiver shopping are coming from the media, not anybody in power in Florham Park.
And honestly, there is really one man in power in Florham Park, and that is Aaron Glenn.
He’s running the show, and Darren Mougey is assisting him.
Glenn is the kingpin.
So we can assure you Glenn wasn’t chirping to any source – “We are looking for receivers.”
Glenn loves Josh Reynolds who he worked with Detroit and had a good camp.
He likes Brandon Smith and Tyler Johnson.
He likes Allen Lazard.
I’m not going go down the whole list, but the Jets are actually going to have tough cuts at that position. So if they have tough decisions (like with Malachi Corley) on who to get rid of, why would they be looking to add to the room?
And honestly, their biggest issue at receiver now is getting Garrett Wilson the ball enough. The combination of Justin Fields to Wilson during the summer didn’t flash as much as it should.
And often second, third, and fourth receivers were in the witness protection program, not getting the rock enough due to a lot of first-read stuff and a ton of QB runs.
I’m telling, this whole thing “Jets are looking for receiver” help narrative. was made up.
