Jets coach Aaron Glenn was asked today, “What is your philosophy, Aaron, on players that are injured – can they lose their starting job through injury?”
“I won’t answer that type of question,” Glenn said.
Nor should he.
It was a good question, but there was no reason for him to go there.
Obviously, while no names were mentioned, this question was probably in reference to QB Tyrod Taylor starting for Justin Fields, who is in concussion protocol.
If Taylor goes out this week and leads the Jets to a win over Tampa Bay on the road, some might wonder who Glenn will start at Week 4 at Miami if Fields clears concussion protocol next week.
Glenn can’t think about that right now. He’s got to focus on getting a much-needed win in Tampa Bay on Sunday.
If they do that, and Taylor plays well, he can figure out who the starter in Miami will be next week.
Also, if he answers that question and says, “Starters never lose their job through injury,” then he’s painted himself in a corner.
And let’s be honest, that “starters should never lose their job through injury” philosophy really should only apply to star players, and they likely wouldn’t lose their job while injured anyway. That philosophy really shouldn’t apply to journeymen. That would be a foolish way to run a football team.
