Jets coach Aaron Glenn was asked today about Quinnen Williams tweeting: “Another rebuild year for me I guess” after the team decided to move on from Aaron Rodgers.
“I understand the reaction of the players, but I’ll say this: Every decision that me and [general manager Darren Mougey] make is to win and to win now,” Glenn said.
On one hand, Jets fans should be happy that Glenn has made it clear that the person who implied to SI’s Albert Breer they are not leaning into “winning right now” wasn’t speaking for him.
Remember what Breer wrote:
“For Rodgers, conversely, it means being with a team that will lean into winning right now . . . but after the last two years, the Jets weren’t going to be that team again.”
So Glenn shot down the premise that they aren’t leaning “into winning right now.”
However, while it’s Glenn’s right, as the team’s new coach, to pick his own QB, some might argue, that getting rid of Rodgers, and entering QB no-man’s land, is not an ideal move if you want to “win and to win now.” Rodgers threw 28 TDs last year, the same as league MVP Josh Allen.
Hey, things could turn out great for the Jets at QB this year. Right now, we don’t know their plan, but it could turn out to be an excellent one. None of us have a crystal ball.
But on the surface, releasing Rodgers doesn’t seem like a “win now” move, so it was interesting that line was included in a quote about the decision to move on.
