This is the best information on the situation by far . . .
and it’s not even close for second.
I know I said I was going to get into the Joe Flacco signing today, but I’m going to push it to Tuesday after seeing the stuff from Yahoo’s Charles Robinson about Jamal Adams contract dispute.
This is the best reporting on the Adams’ situation so far.
Robinson is a dogged reporter, with a lot of sources, who is very good at getting to the bottom of situations. And Yahoo gives him time to dig on stories, and not waste his time chasing windmills, doing stupid stuff like hot takes.
From what I understand, Robinson has a great source with the Jets. A great one. I can’t say his name, but it’s a great one.
So the stuff he delivered on Adams, he’s not making up out of whole cloth.
Tweet #1 from Robinson:
“Sticking point on extension is simple. Guys like Aaron Donald and Khalil Mack played four seasons (and won DPOY) before their extensions. #Jets don’t want to do (Jamal) Adams’ deal after three years for the highest-paid-safety money he wants. In 2021 it could be a different story.”
That kind of makes sense, doesn’t it? Guys like Donald and Mack, had to wait four years to get new deals, so why can’t Adams? Also, as we have mentioned before, if you give in to Adams after three years, don’t you think Mekhi Becton’s agent will see that, and if the offensive tackle plays well, he will look for a new deal after three years? It’s a bad precedent to set.
Tweet #2:
“Adams’ trade preference is the #Cowboys, but that’s not the only team he’d play for. There are others. But it’s been clear for a while to the Jets he’d like to be close to his home town, which is near Dallas. This feels a lot like the Earl Thomas crossroads with the #Seahawks.”
This certainly doesn’t seem like Robinson is just guessing, considering how he phrased it by saying, “It’s been clear for a while to the Jets he’d like to be close to his home town.”
This is why we said the other day that we thought Adams was perhaps feigning outrage at the Jets for talking trade with Dallas before the trade deadline. You could make the argument that he was pissed that the wasn’t traded to his hometown team, not at the Jets dangling him in trade talks.
Tweet #3:
“Cowboys haven’t called #Jets about Adams yet. And they face two possible financial hurdles if they deal for him: Either ask him to play on his rookie deal another year (like Jalen Ramsey did with the #Rams to get that deal done), or get Dak Prescott signed to a long term deal.”
That is a great point. If Dallas does trade for Adams, it could be under the provision that he is willing to wait until 2021 to get his new contract.
Tweet #4:
“I firmly believe there is some family & emotion wrapped up in this. Adams has been upset since last season’s trade deadline drama, and he’s getting some strong trade advisement from his father George, who was a former NFL running back and first round pick. It’s a little messy.”
This makes perfect sense. If you remember, George Adams was a former first-round pick of the Giants (1985), but has his career was shortened by a severe hip injury. He had to retire in 1991. You see George Adams now and he can hardly walk. He walks with a severe limp. So he knows that in football you’ve got to get paid sooner rather than later. This concept that Jamal has to wait to get his second contract is something where surely George is telling him you can’t wait – you have to strike while the iron is hot.
