Geno Smith’s only drive against Pittsburgh on Friday was near-perfect, going 7-for-7 passing, hitting six different receivers, with the possession punctuated by a 13-yard TD pass to tight end Jelani Woods.
This drive was a good example of what the Jets envisioned with the football marriage of Smith and OC Frank Reich.
Smith is a quintessential game manager, and Reich is an excellent offensive chess player. Reich did a great job of dialing up easy reads, and Smith did his part, connecting on them.
“I think we all did a great job of just going out there and getting points,” Smith said. “We had some third-down situations that we converted; we had an explosive play on that drive with the pass to AD (Adonai Mitchell). And usually, Coach talks about when you have an explosive on the drive, it usually leads to points; the percentage of scoring points go up. So, I thought for the most part, everyone did their jobs.”
Reich is very good at manufacturing production with his play-calling. Not all OC’s are great at this. Reich is.
All Smith has to do is be a good point guard and distribute the ball to the Jets’ myriad playmakers, and that is what you saw on this series.
