My take on what Harrison Phillips said . . .

Jets defensive tackle Harrison Phillips made news on radio row at the Super Bowl by saying about the team’s struggles last year, “I think AG inherited a very cancerous, truculent group — whole, top to bottom.”

Phillips said this to Roundtable Sports.

Phillips later told the New York Post he wasn’t criticizing individuals but the “Same Old Jets” mindset.

“That’s a cancerous thought to have,” he told the Post.

Well, some would argue that if that was the problem, it was the first-year coach’s job to clean that up.

But honestly, you could make a strong argument that this stuff had nothing to do with the Jets’ bad season last year.

Or if it did, it was low on the list of problems.

The Jets’ issues were more related to not having an answer at QB, having a subpar overall roster, and suspect X’s and O’s.

The Jets’ defense probably needs to add 6-7 new starters this offseason.

A big problem for the Jets’ defense was stopping the run up the middle, and blown coverages galore on the back seven. Those things were a combination of roster and scheme issues.

A supposed “SOJ” mindset really had very little to do with what we saw this past year.
