There is no questioning QB Justin Fields’ natural ability with his rocket arm and 4.5 speed.
But one area some feel he needs to improve at is going through his progressions.
How did he do in the progression game in his first spring with the Jets?
“I think he’s done a great job of progressing through his reads,” said Jets QB coach Charles London. “It’s really just training his eyes on where they need to be, train him what to look for, and if it’s not there, let’s progress on to the next read as fast as we can. There is some stuff we try to drill with him as we go through the film, and I think he’s doing a great job of trying to use the footwork and trying to use the progressions we’ve asked him to use.”
But while there could have been progression improvement in the spring, the true gauge of whether his progression scans have improved will be in real football games, not spring practices.
Because in practice, defenders can’t touch the QB, so they often have more time to throw than in real games.
So the true litmus test on whether Fields has improved in this area will be when opponents are coming at him trying to sack him, along with disguising coverages, in real football games.
Stay tuned.
