The New York Jets have hired former Miami Dolphins secondary coach Brian Duker as their defensive coordinator.
And they are taking a lot of criticism for the hire.
What is my opinion on Duker?
I don’t have one. I have never seen him coach on a field, run a meeting, draw up a play, teach a technique.
So how could I have an educated opinion?
The Jets are taking a lot of heat on X (Twitter) for the hire, but how educated are these vitriolic tweets? Then again, the concept of “educated opinions” and Twitter don’t often go hand in hand.
Is this a good hire?
We will find out.
I wondered if the hiring of a 35-year-old special teams coach, Chris Banjo, who had been coaching just two years, was a good hire last year, due to his lack of experience, but that turned out to be a solid hire by Aaron Glenn.
I’m not going to sit here, and criticize the Duker hire when, to use an old Chris Russo expression, “I wouldn’t know Brian Duker if he fell on me.”
Hey, this could turn out to be a terrible hire, who knows?
It could turn out to be a good hire, who knows?
But to me, to harshly criticize a coaching hire, who most people know so little about, and have never seen in action, is reckless.
