I have an idea for the Jets’ brass.
Maybe Bruce Speight can pass this along.
Since it’s likely Geno Smith is going to start against Tampa Bay, and Mark Sanchez (shoulder) is probably a long shot to even play in Week Two, I would have Brady Quinn start preparing for New England NOW with a low level assistant coach.
Think about it – it’s hard hard enough for a rookie like Smith to prepare for a regular Sunday NFL game, can you imagine him facing Tom Brady and New England on the road, on Thursday night, after a short week of preparation? With all due respect to the kid, that could be a recipe for disaster.
So here is my plan – Smith starts against Tampa Bay with Matt Simms as the backup.
And the Jets have Quinn focus on New England – playbook, film study, game plan and so forth.
Now if Smith is really good against Tampa Bay, of course he starts in New England.
However, if he struggles, and looks like he’s not truly ready to start in the NFL, you have Quinn locked and loaded for the Patriots.
