Former Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff is now doing work for the Jets’ Flagship Radio Station.
Westhoff had an interesting comment on ESPN Radio recently.
“If Geno Smith is not your quarterback this year you’re probably in the draft looking for one next year,
Westhoff said.
I have to respectfully disagree with the coach.
Why does Smith, a raw rookie, transitioning from a gimmicky college spread offense, to a conventional NFL offense, have to show you his entire worth this year?
Isn’t that a little big too much to ask of the kid?
If Smith show he’s not ready early in the season, and the Jets replace him with another one of their quarterbacks, who is more NFL savvy, that doesn’t mean Smith is a bust. Not at all. He can still re-emerge and be “the guy” in the future, perhaps late in the season or next year.
He’s a young guy with a lot to learn this year.
