Indianapolis -Dan checks in from the Combine at Lucas Oil Field with a heaping helping of Jets Whispers . . .
I hear the Jets could be interested in free agent safeties Jairus Byrd (Buffalo Bills) and T.J. Ward (Cleveland Browns).
Reportedly, the Cleveland Browns are interested in Byrd in free agency.
It makes sense since Mike Pettine coached him in Buffalo last year, and he could come to Cleveland, knowing the system, and can provide leadership.
So if Byrd does go to Cleveland, it could create a domino effect, and Ward would be out of the picture, and end-up elsewhere, perhaps with the Jets . . .
The Jets must love Virginia left tackles.
They have D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Oday Aboushi on their roster, and they had a meeting at the combine with Morgan Moses.
Moses did play left tackle as a senior, but prior to that played right tackle and guard, so he has position flexibility . . .
I just don’t get the sense the Jets are going to make a big splash in free agency at the wide receiver position.
It’s not a strong class.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually make more of a splash on the defensive side of the ball.
A couple of names to keep in mind – DE Jared Allen (Minnesota) and OLB DeMarcus Ware (Dallas).
It’s unclear what Dallas is going to do with Ware, but if he doesn’t get tagged, the Jets could make a move on him.
While there is so much focus on the Jets receiver need, which must be addressed, there are other needs.
They could use another corner, perhaps a nickel back like Tracy Porter (Oakland Raiders).
I think they’d love to add a player like Grimes, a terrific man-to-man corner.
But Allen and Ware are two interesting names to keep an eye on.
No question the Jets have a terrific defensive line, but they could use a dynamic edge pass rusher.
Can you imagine a defensive line with Mo Wilkerson, Damon Harrison and Sheldon Richardson, with Allen or Ware coming off the edge?
Tom Brady wouldn’t be able to sleep the night before a Jets game . . .
GM’s and coaches at the combine can’t stop raving about how deep this year’s draft is.
Colts GM Ryan Grigson, whose team doesn’t have a #1 pick this year, said the draft is so loaded, that they should be able to get terrific players after the first round.
So with that being said, this is an awesome year to have two third round picks, which the Jets possess.
They should be do real well for themselves, and get two potential impact players in Round Three . . .
NFL coaches, GM’s and coaches are foaming at the mouth about Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins.
He’s clearly the best receiver in the draft.
The feeling in NFL circles is that we are looking at a potential NFL superstar.
I hear Rex Ryan loves him.
And remember, Ryan was a Clemson football walk-on at the wide receiver position.
So Ryan and his son know the kid very well.
But the Jets will have to trade up for him . . .
