Albert Breer, who has become the preeminent insider related to the thinking of Jets ownership, offered this nugget on his podcast:
“I think now so much of the focus goes to fixing the quarterback position (moving forward),” Breer said on his podcast. “Because this is something they discussed, and ownership did not want to press the quarterback thing on their new guys in 2025 because of who was available last off-season. They did not view it as a rich quarterback market.”
The Jets ended up cutting QB Aaron Rodgers last off-season and signing Justin Fields to a two-year $40 million contract with $30 million guaranteed, and named him the starter early in the off-season. Fields finished the season 2-7 as a starter.
But it sounds like, based on Breer’s reporting, no matter who the new regime had signed to be their QB this season, ownership was granting them a mulligan at the position for 2025-26 season.
“They did not view the quarterback market as having a lot of answers,” Breer said. “They are going to do a lot to get it right over the next couple of off-seasons.”
