Is this a legitimate excuse for how the Jets are playing?

You get the sense that one rationale for the Jets’ 0-5 start is the old “Rome wasn’t built in a day” narrative.

“Listen, it’s going to take time, fellas,” Aaron Glenn said after the Jets’ loss to Dallas on Sunday.

Perhaps, but while nobody expected the Jets to make the Super Bowl this year, who thought they would be this bad, even during a reboot, under a coach with the reputation of being a disciplinarian?

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio said last week, after the Jets’ loss to Miami, dropping them to 0-4, “We really didn’t expect in Week 4 that Aaron Glenn’s team would be this undisciplined. We thought by this time, that they would not be making the kind of easy mistakes that are avoidable even for a young team.”

Glenn is also hanging his hat on the fact that some great coaches in NFL history struggled in their first year.

“I talked to two guys this week, again, I told you guys, Tony Dungy, Jimmy Johnson,” Glenn said. “They all had these issues early on.”

But Dungy liked to say, “No excuses, no explanations,” and by telling the media and fans, “It’s going to take time,” that could be perceived by some as an “excuse” or “explanation” for the Jets’ sloppy play so far.

Some might argue that 23 penalties in the last two games aren’t just a byproduct of “it’s going to take time.”

You could surmise it goes deeper than that.
