This narrative is so foolish and out of touch with reality, that isn’t worth spending a lot of time on. But it’s time to get into it briefly.
If you want to get clicks in the internet world for your bosses, and you cover the Jets, write about USC QB Sam Darnold.
You hear the phrase “Suck-for-Sam” a lot on social media pages.
In other words, the Jets should try to lose in 2017, so they will be in a strong position to pick Darnold, if he comes out next year.
So with Darnold click-bait magic working so well in the Jets nation, we bring you this story from the Daily News.
“One Las Vegas oddsmaker delivered this sobering news to the Suck-for-Sam crowd hoping the Jets can finally land their franchise quarterback a year from now: Your team might not suck enough to draft USC wunderkind Sam Darnold … or any of the other top-end signal callers,” wrote the Daily News Jets columnist. “South Point Casino recently released the first projected 2017 win totals for every NFL team. The Vegas bookmaker believes that three teams will finish with fewer wins than Gang Green’s projected 5.5 over/under. It figures that the two bottom feeders — the Browns (4) and 49ers (4.5) — will also be looking for franchise quarterbacks in 2018. The Bears, who shocked the world by trading up for Mitchell Trubisky last week, have a projected five-win total. The Jaguars, who could also be in search of a franchise QB, and Rams are tied with the Jets at 5.5.”
This whole deal is ridiculous.
First of all, the Jets aren’t going to try and “Suck-for-Sam.”
They are trying to win this year.
“You rebuild as far as people and names but you don’t rebuild in terms of trying to win or not win-we’re trying to win all the time,” Bowles said. “We’re always trying to win. We don’t do anything in the mindset [of rebuilding].”
This isn’t just coach-speak. It’s how he’s approaching things.
And as I’ve pointed out over the course of this past week, the Jets aren’t going as young as some people will lead you to believe. And they likely won’t be as bad as some people will lead you to believe.
But to act like these over/under totals from this casino mean anything now, is ridiculous. It’s pure speculation. They don’t know what is going to happen.
So even if you are a fan who wants to “Suck-for-Sam” you might get your wish regardless of what the casino says. They don’t know.
“The promise of landing Darnold is the only thing that gets many Jets diehards out of bed each morning,” wrote the Daily News.
If that is true, that is sad, if you are so focused on a college quarterback who had one good year.
Who knows how Darnold will do this year?
But nonetheless, the Jets have missed the playoffs six straight years and are coming off a very bad season. They need to try and win this year.
They are in no position to “Suck-for-Sam” which is good for click-bait, but not much else.
