Geno Smith’s agent, Jay-Z, took a shot at veteran agent Scott Boras, the former agent for one of the professional athletes he recent signed to his agency, Roc Nation.
One of the players Jay-Z signed was New York Yankee star Robinson Cano, a Boras’ client.
“Scott Boras, you over baby,” wrapped Jay-Z. “Robinson Cano, you coming with me.”
Boras responded – “My music taste, I love jazz. I’m a huge Bernie Williams fan.”
I’d have to side with Boras when it comes to music.
There is no question Jay-Z is a marketing genius, but I think a lot of his lyrics are a terrible influence on impressionable kids, flooding their minds with words and life-styles that aren’t ideal.
Here are some of the lyrics from his hit song – “Ain’t no [N-Word] – Foxy Brown.”
“I keep it fresher than the next bitch.
“No need for you to ever sweat the next bitch.
“I make the best bitch see the exit.”
And in his his hit, “Money, Cash, Hoes,” he starts off the song this way –
“F (deleted) all y’al haters, blow [male sex organ]
“I spits the game for those that throw bricks
“Money, cash, hoes, money, cash, chicks.”
So what exactly does “hoes” mean? According to one internet slang dictionary, it means “Whore, slut.”
That is a horrible way to speak about women.
I’m sure Geno’s mother is a wonderful woman. By all accounts she did a very good job raising him in not the best of neighborhoods.
But I’m surprised that she doesn’t have an issue with the lyrics about women that her son’s new agent cranks out.
In late May, this is what Geno had to say about hiring Jay-Z to represent him.
“My mother, my family is comfortable with it,” said Smith. “I’m comfortable with it.”
Maybe Geno’s mother isn’t aware of some of the lyrics.
Imagine saying, “Hey mom, I just hired an agent who refers to women as ‘bitches’ and ‘hoes.’ What do you think?”
I’m sorry, maybe I’m old fashioned, but I will never accept that sort of language being used to describe women. I’m not cool with it.
And the fact that it’s now accepted in the mainstream, and people seem to lose no sleep over it, is one reason why our culture is in the toilet.
And let me just say this – Jay-Z is getting a little cocky with his new agency.
A lot of GM’s might not like Scott Boras due to some of his negotiating tactics, but he’s a heck of an agent, grabbing his clients some of the best contracts in baseball history.
For Jay-Z to disrespect Boras because he managed to convince Robby Cano to leave him – give me a break.
Right now, Jay-Z isn’t in the stratosphere of Boras as an agent – not even close.
Or Smith’s original agents – Jeff Nalley and Erik Burkhardt.
So before Jay-Z starts talking trash about established agents, let’s see some of the deals he cuts.
