While Tanner Engstrand will run the Jets offense, another key figure in the Jets’ offensive operation will be the team’s passing game coordinator Scott Turner.
Turner, who has been coaching in the NFL since 2011, will be a good person for first-time NFL coordinator Engstrand to lean on.
Turner has been coaching offensive football in the NFL for the last 14 years, including serving as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator from 2020-22. He was also the Las Vegas Raiders’ interim offensive coordinator last year after Luke Getsy was fired on November 5.
Not only has he been coaching offensive football in the NFL for quite a while, but he grew up around offensive X’s and O’s as the son of long-time NFL head coach and offensive coordinator Norv Turner.
So Scott Turner will be a good sounding board for Engstrand.
Scott Turner was asked last week during an interview session with a handful of beat writers what kind of offensive system the Jets will run under Engstrand.
“I think it’s going to be a physical system,” Scott Turner said. “We are going to run the football and try to chase explosive plays. You look around the NFL, obviously, when you are running the ball, it’s a way to control the game, but to score, you can’t just go five yards. You try to get those 20, 25-plus-yard (plays), and that is going to be mostly in the passing game. That is what we are going to be hunting.”
