Allen Lazard had a tremendous catch on a hail mary and the key block Breece Hall’s 42-yard run off left tackle.
He also had a 25-yard catch.
The guy is a very good football player who some fans and reporters treated like trash last year and in the off-season, some suggested the team should move on.
Lazard’s bad season in 2023 was greatly exaggerated.
Did he have a few drops? Absolutely.
But his biggest problem was the Jets’ substandard QB play last year.
Look how much better he looks this year with Aaron Rodgers.
He never forgot how to play.
Like a lot of receivers, when the most important position in football is played at a low level, people often blame the receiver in this fantasy football age, when it’s more the QB.
The attacks on Lazard last year and in the offseason were bush-league. He wasn’t perfect, but nothing a good QB couldn’t fix . . .
Tyron Smith is still a solid tackle but after a decade in the league and myriad injuries, he might not be the same player he was in his heyday in Dallas.
In the first half, he gave up a sack to A.J. Epenesa to end a drive, and in the second half, he was called for holding Dawuane Smoot to bring back a Braelon Allen TD run.
Once again, he’s still solid, but like every player, Father Time eventually catches up. Still very good, but perhaps not elite at this point . . .
Garrett Wilson is a hell of a player, and is a true #1 receiver, however, in my opinion, they are throwing him too many passes in traffic for a player his size. He’s somewhat slender and doesn’t have a lot of body armor. He is taking a beating, much like he did last year, when he played the last month of the season with an elbow injury.
There was a pass in the middle of the end zone in the fourth quarter into heavy coverage, where Wilson initially caught, but got rocked and dropped it. He was down for a couple of minutes and was helped off by the trainers.
I’d be very careful with all these traffic throws they are featuring him on considering his body type. He has already taken a lot of big hits this year and has gotten dinged a couple of times.
As Bill Parcells liked to say, “Know who you are.”
Don’t throw too many Brandon Marshall kind of passes to a skinny receiver in heavy traffic, that is all I’m saying . . .
I just don’t get it, and it’s time for somebody to ask Jeff Ulbrich about this – why do they use defensive end Will McDonald on the goalline defense?
An example of that was in first quarter on the one-yard line when Josh Allen scored on a scramble.
This is a 6-4, 236-pound end.
You can’t just rotate your defensive ends willy-nilly.
Maybe I’m wrong, but over the years, most teams I’ve covered used what they call a “jumbo package” on the goalline – using their bigger-bodied defensive ends to form a more formidable wall.
Can somebody please explain to me why you would use a skinny defensive end on the goalline?
I promise you, I will find out . . .
Mike Williams had a little bit of a rough game tonight, so this could create more impetus for a Davante Adams trade.
Sometimes it looks like Williams and Rodgers aren’t on the same page, which is somewhat understandable since Williams missed all of camp rehabbing a knee injury . . .
Jets’ run defense continues to be a problem.
Buffalo’s first drive was a textbook example of how not to play the run.
Still a lot of issues up the middle, even with both Javon Kinlaw and Leki Fotu active together for the first time tonight.
On the last series, after the late pick, with the Jets needing a three and out, the Bills ran for five yards up the middle on first down, and they got the first down on third-and-four when Josh Allen took the corner on Michael Clemons.
Too much leaky yardage.
