He’s a good player, but the contract Mr. Coffee gave him back in 2019 was perhaps a little too caffeinated.
On March 12, 2019, linebacker C.J. Mosley signed a 5-year deal, for $85 million, with $51 million guaranteed.
For an inside linebacker, that was a little profligate at the time.
The Jets gave Mosley about $4 million a year more than his previous team, the Baltimore, Ravens, were offering. Mosley would have been nuts to turn down that kind of generosity. He loved playing in Baltimore, but who would turn down $17 million a year compared to $13 million a year?
Nothing against Mosley, but you can get a really good inside linebacker for $6-8 million a year.
And that is what the Jets are finally doing with this player, scheduled to make $17 million this year, ESPN’s Field Yates announced that the Jets and Mosley have agreed to a two-year deal for $17.2 million with $13.2 guaranteed.
Hat-tip to Jets GM Joe Douglas, and his cap guy Dave Socie, for finally fixing a deal that was a little over the top, and to Mosley for adjusting.
