Jets D-Line coach points to 1 issue with run defense that needs to change

On paper, the Arizona Cardinals’ offense is a bad matchup for the Jets’ defense.

The Jets are struggling to stop the run, and the Cardinals are one of the NFL’s better rushing teams, and never abandon it.

“I think they’re committed to it,” said Jets defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton. “I think (RB) James Connor’s doing an incredible job. He’s a very good YAC runner, first contact doesn’t typically bring him down. They’re just doing a really good job of staying efficient, staying committed, and just keep churning, and churning, and churning, and churning, and that’s from like quarter one to quarter four. ”

And they have a very good running quarterback – Kyler Murray.

What do the Jets need to do to improve their run defense?

“There’s been some times, inopportune times, (like) the end of the Pittsburgh game, some of the stuff where we had some runs that got out where like, ‘man, in that critical moments you can’t have that.'” Whitecotton said.

Down one score early in the fourth quarter, the Steelers tailback Najee Harris went off left guard for a 34-yard gain, setting up a TD that made it a two-score game.

So Whitecotton feels they have been playing a lot of good run defense, but there has been some ill-timed big-chunk runs mixed in.

“In those critical times there can’t be mistakes, so that’s where those issues can’t happen,” Whitecotton said.
