If you are corner and you don’t get a jam in press coverage on Garrett Wilson coming off th line, it’s usually over for you, with his amazing short area quickness in the open field to cut away from defenders.
Wilson was dominant against the Giants in the joint practice today . . .
Jets rookie running back Braelon Allen ran over a Giants defensive back today on the second level. There is no tackling in training camp practices, but he just ran over a guy trying to stop him standing up . . .
While the Jets passing game was impressive today, it does look like the Giants secondary could be pretty bad this year . . .
D.J. Reed is a very good player, and he’s a boon to the Jets, but there are certain matchups that aren’t ideal for him, like covering speedster Malik Nabors on a deep pass today. The receiver didn’t come down with the pass, but he got by Reed.
This is not Reed’s fault. He runs 4.52 and Nabors runs 4.35. You do the math.
In these practices, the teams don’t worry about matchups, they just play the basic scheme, and people line up where they line up, but it’s probably best when the Jets face a burner, to have Sauce Gardner match-up . . .
Watching wide receiver Jason Brownlee this summer, it’s hard to believe he wasn’t drafted. He caught yet another deep ball in practice today, this time down the deep left sideline from Tyrod Taylor.
Brownlee joined the Jets last year as an undrafted free agent from Southern Mississippi. He was a little underutilized in college because they didn’t have a great QB situation.
If this guy was at Southern Mississippi now, he probably would have made good money in the portal with a major program paying him a lot of NIL money to transfer.
But watching him last summer, a little last season, and then this summer, he looks like a third-round receiver to me . . .
Tight end Kenny Yeboah had a nice block today sealing the left corner on a long run by rookie running back Isaiah Davis.
Yeboah is probably ahead of Zach Kuntz for perhaps the last tight end spot . . .
The Jets will probably keep just two quarterbacks on the active roster – Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor, and with another one on the practice squad.
While Adrian Martinez flashed in the Jets win in Week 1 of the preseason over the Washington Commanders, I would give Andrew Peasley a slight edge because he seems to go through his progressions a little better. Martinez is a little better at street-yard ball with his 4.55 speed and ability to make plays with his feet. but Peasley perhaps sees the field better.
I could be wrong, but that is how it see it . . .
Michael Clemons has not spoken to the media this summer. Something seems to be bothering him regarding the press . . .
Watching guard/center Jake Hanson today, he’s got a stout lower build, and does a nice job anchoring against power . . .
The Jets have done a nice job of keeping veteran left tackle Tyron Smith on a pitch count this summer and not wearing the 33-year-old out in practice.
“I feel great,” Smith said today after practice.
