The Jets can win Sunday, if they repeat this formula

Adam Schefter announced on Friday that Zach Wilson will start for the Jets on Sunday, with Mike White dealing with fractured ribs.

Wilson was replaced by White after the Jets’ loss in New England on November 20, where Wilson threw for just 77 yards, and missed some open targets.

The Jets hit the reset button with Wilson after the loss in New England to help him work on his mechanics.

Now Wilson’s back, and if they hope to have success with their second-year QB against Detroit on Sunday, they need to replicate their approach from their 20-17 upset win over Buffalo on November 6 – run the football, play strong defense and dial up ideal great first-read throws for their QB, something OC Mike LaFleur did a great job doing in that Buffalo win.

Some examples of the great first-read throws LaFleur dialed up in the first Buffalo game:

• On the first play of the second series, Zach Wilson hit Garrett Wilson on a one-read throw for a gain of 15.

• In the second quarter, Zach Wilson hit Garrett Wilson on a first read, down the right seam, for a gain of 24. Then on fourth-and-1, right after the two-minute warning, Zach Wilson ran a bootleg right to C.J. Uzomah, an easy throw for an easy gain of 5 yards.

• Early in the third quarter, the QB hit Garrett Wilson on a first-read down the left seam for a gain of 17. On a third-and-2 later in this series, he faked a handoff to James Robinson up the middle, setting up an easy throw to Braxton
Berrios in the right flat for a gain of 6.

• In the third quarter, Zach Wilson threw a screen right for a 7-yard TD by Robinson.

• Late in the game, on a third-and-5, Zach Wilson had a one-read pass to Denzel Mims on the right side for a gain of 12.

Wilson finished the game 18-of-25, so his completion percentage was 72 percent, a far cry from the first New England game, when he was 20-for-41.

There should be a lot of first reads open against a Lions defense that just gave up 425 yards passing to Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins.

As Bill Parcells liked to say, “There is a way to win every game.”

If the Jets can replicate their approach from the Buffalo on November 6, they have a good chance to win this game.
