This move didn’t make the most sense . . .
On the Patriots’ first run of the game, a 12-yard gain up the middle by Damien Harris, linebacker Jamien Sherwood got manhandled.
Then on the first play of the second series, a Harris gain of nine up the middle, guard Shaq Mason took out Sherwood.
The Patriots clearly decided they were going to run at the former college safety making the conversion to linebacker.
I don’t understand how you can start a 216-pound player at middle linebacker in the NFL?
This seems a little odd to me . . .
Overall, the Jets’ linebackers had a rough game today in run support and coverage. Man, did they miss C.J. Mosley. And even when Mosley plays, the people around him are wildly inconsistent. You know the linebackers didn’t have a good game based on the fact that their two leading tacklers were safeties – Marcus Maye with 12, and Ashtyn Davis with 11.
Quincy Williams is tough as heck, and actually exited this game with a concussion, but it looked like he was actually pulled early in the game, in favor of Blake Cashman. He let tight end Jonnu Smith get behind him for a gain of 24. He didn’t follow him. The same thing happened in the first Jets-Pats game when TE Hunter Henry got behind him for a gain of 27. Williams was out for a while. He eventually re-entered the lineup in the second half. He needs to read his keys better . . .
Cashman pulled his groin today. It could be the end of the line for him with the Jets. Not his fault, but he just can’t stay healthy. He could be headed for an injury settlement . . .
Not sure why the Jets keep calling running plays for Michael Carter up the middle in short-yardage situations. He is much better at running off tackle. Like the Jets’ first two offensive plays of the game, runs for 1- and 3-yards, and then on a failed two-point conversion in the second half.
Carter is a terrific player, not sure short-yardage, between the tackle runs, is his forte. It’s imperative you put your players to the best of their ability if you want to have a successful program . . .
From an X’s and O’s standpoint, it was like the Jets were playing checkers and the Patriots were playing chess.
The Jets’ coaches need to step up on the strategic front.
It’s a little underwhelming for the Jets to come out of a bye-week, where you have two weeks to game-plan and do a lot of self-scouting to fix things, and come out and lose 54-13.
Joe Douglas needs to look into what is going on here.
With the Jets’ change in power structure in the off-season, Douglas is now the boss of the coaches, and what happened in Foxboro is clearly unacceptable.
Somebody has got to say, like the line from the movie, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.” . . .
While he threw two interceptions in the place of Zach Wilson, who hurt his knee in the second quarter, Mike White did some things, including two gorgeous passes, one on a TD to Corey Davis, the other a dime to Jamison Crowder for 21-yards on third-and-three in the third quarter.
He got rid of the ball quicker than Wilson who tends to hold the ball too long.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport announced that Wilson likely has a PCL sprain. Wilson is represented by the William Morris Agency.
If the Wilson is out a few weeks, there should not be a dropoff to White.
