Garrett Wilson is obviously a very good receiver, but throwing to one receiver 23 times in a game, generally isn’t an ideal plan.
And that is how many times the Jets threw to Wilson in their loss to Minnesota.
Perhaps because the media and fans were pounding the drum about how Wilson averaged just five catches a game in the first four contests, that led some to try and appease the public.
But you should not govern by public opinion polls.
His yards per catch was 7.8 on 13 grabs, which is very low by NFL standards.
“They targeted Garrett Wilson 23 times in the game,” said former NFL GM Mike Lombardi on VSIN. “God that’s wonderful. He averaged 7.8 yards per catch. His long play was 16 yards. That’s not beating anybody.”
While Wilson should be targeted a lot because he’s very talented, 23 times is overkill. They need to spread it around more, but even more importantly, they need to run the ball a heck of a lot more.
The Jets ran the ball 46 percent of the time in Weeks 1-3 and 23 percent of the time in the last two games.
23 percent in two close games?
With Todd Downing taking over the play-calling, expect more run calls, considering his background calling plays in Tennessee in 2021-22 where they were a run-heavy attack with star tailback Derrick Henry.
