This is not a criticism of Daniel Jeremiah, who does a heck of a job as a draft analyst for NFL Network and as the color analyst on the Los Angeles Chargers Radio Network.
And I’m sure he doesn’t even like doing mock drafts, but they are so popular that he’s got to do them for his bosses at NFL Media, because they get tons of clicks on NFL.com.
In his first mock draft of the year, he has the Jets picking Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese at 2 and then Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate at 16.
The first pick is kind of the consensus pick, so it makes sense, but the second one doesn’t make a ton of sense.
I understand he says it’s a “value pick” at 16, but if the Jets don’t pick a QB, they have to go defense.
I’m not going to lie, I’ve covered the Jets for a long time, and this is the worst defense I’ve ever covered.
People can blame the defensive coaches until the cows come home, and most of them paid a high price for this defensive debacle by losing their jobs, but in fairness, a lot of the problems were personnel-related. They need new players at positions on all three levels of their defense.
After he selected Tate for the Jets at 16, Jeremiah wrote, “The Jets pair former Ohio State star Garrett Wilson with a fellow Buckeye.”
What is wrong with pairing Wilson with Adonai Mitchell or John Metchie, then picking a defensive tackle, safety, or cornerback?
Sorry, perhaps needing 6-7 new defensive starters, they don’t have the luxury of picking a receiver at 16.
This isn’t fantasy football.
