A heaping helping of Thursday OTA Whispers.
Jets WR Corey Davis has missed the last couple of weeks of OTA practices due to a shoulder injury. He reportedly landed on it awkwardly after making a catch.
But watching him catching passes on a side field during practice today, it doesn’t look like a long-term issue. He was reaching up and catching passes from a Jets staffer. Honestly, if this was a serious shoulder injury, there is little chance he’d be making extension grabs over his head, it wouldn’t be advisable and likely very painful.
All signs point to him being ready for training camp . . .
An unfortunate turn for Jets linebacker Blake Cashman, who was seen in the rehab area of the practice field today. Not sure what the nature of the injury is, but the bottom line is, this player might inching closer to an injury settlement. His rookie season ended on November 1, 2019, with a shoulder injury, that landed him on IR, and led to his third documented shoulder surgery. Then in 2020, he landed on IR twice. First after Week 1 with a groin injury, and then after returning on October 17, he landed back on IR on December 3 with a hamstring injury.
And now he’s dealing with something else.
Look, nobody should blame him for this. He doesn’t want to get hurt, but his durability issues could imperil his Jets career . . .
With cornerback Bless Austin still out with some kind of injury, the Jets are trying different guys at the spot opposite Bryce Hall. On Tuesday, it was Jason Pinnock, and today, it was Isaiah Dunn, an undrafted free agent from Oregon State, who got a $185,000 guaranteed salary, and a $25,000 signing bonus, which shows you how much the Jets valued him.
He had a couple of nice plays in coverage today in practice.
Not sure if Pinnock or Dunn are starting quality corners, but don’t assume that Pinnock being a fifth-round pick, and Dunn, a UDFA, puts Pinnock ahead of Dunn in the pecking order. Not at all. They are on an even playing field.
Dunn had no career picks at Oregon State, so questions about his instincts and ball skill led to him going undrafted, but today in practice, and it’s just one day, he displayed good ball skills . . .
Some in the media is going to make a big deal about the fact that tight end Chris Herndon had a drop today, because he had some drop issues at the beginning of last season, but it’s important to provide some context on this “drop” today.
What happened was Zach Wilson threw a pass to Herndon down the middle of the field, and it got there right as he turned around, and it kind of startled him, and he wasn’t able to hold on – it tipped off his hand and was picked off.
This is what the spring is for, for the QB and targets to get on the same page, and for the QB to get a feel for how the targets come out of their breaks.
Should Herndon have caught this? Probably, but it wasn’t easy, and this play will help Wilson and Herndon have a better feel for each other moving forward, and that is what the spring is for . . .
Backup QB Mike White continues to look good in the spring. Those who are telling you he’s struggling are misleading you.
Will the Jets add a veteran backup at some point? Probably, but White has a future with this team. He’s got great size, a good arm, and does a nice job of going through his progressions.
