Some blunt Jets talk post-Buffalo. . .
Michael Carter is a great kid, and had a terrific rookie year, but you wonder if his confidence has taken a little bit of a hit this season, with Breece Hall taking centerstage over the first seven games of the year before his season-ending injury, and then Bam Knight recently.
Carter lost a fumble on the Bills’ 23 on a long drive late in the game.
He’s had his moment, but overall something is missing this season . . .
When Denzel Mims was coming out of Baylor, while he was a highly-regarded prospect, one concern about him was his ability to win on 50-50 balls, catching contested passes.
“Despite size, gets bullied at the catch point,” wrote NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zeirlein. “History of drops and poor success rate on contested catches.”
This issue continues. There was another one today.
Don’t get the wrong idea. He’s good at going up and getting the football, using his 6-3 frame, and leaping ability, to up and get it. The problem is when he competes for the ball with a defensive back, it too often doesn’t work out. For some reason, he doesn’t come down with enough of these . . .
Interesting tidbit. Often during games played in weather like today – wintry mix – very wet conditions – according to a former player, teams will look to throw more on first down when the ball is the driest. I thought that was fascinating . . .
The Bills had their star receiver Stefon Diggs lined up in the slot quite a bit today, which was quite a compliment to the Jets’ two outside corners – D.J. Reed and Sauce Gardner. They wanted to get him on CB Michael Carter or a safety or maybe even a linebacker sometimes . . .
Joe Douglas has done an excellent job as Jets GM, but his love affair with Joe Flacco, hasn’t been a good look. Not only did he bury Mike White behind this guy, late last year, but early this one. We know Douglas and Flacco go back to their Baltimore Ravens days, but enough already. That was a long time ago. He’s a statue in the pocket. He had a costly fumble in Buffalo. And while White is a high-road guy, you have to wonder if Douglas’ handling of Flacco, will make him think twice about re-signing. Once again, Douglas has done a hell of job overall, but him continually playing the Flacco card is making him look bad. He should never have traded for Flacco, and shouldn’t have re-signed him. Lets’ be honest, both these moves dissed White.
And also, Flacco disrespected White when he arrived after the 2021 trade with Philly, by saying, at his introductory press conference that he expected to play, and at the time, White was the QB. That was lowbrow.
In fact, it’s probably time to have Chris Streveler active as the backup until Zach Wilson’s mechanics are fixed. Why? He’s really mobile, and as you saw today, with the inconsistency of the Jets’ offensive line, you need a mobile backup.
Look, once again, Douglas is a heck of a GM, but this Flacco stuff, c’mon man, you are better than that.
