Houston – Herman Edwards always liked to say, “there is perception and reality.” Right now, it’s time for Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan to have a meeting and talk reality, no smoke blowing . . .
Like we said on Friday, not that it’s rocket science, but on any given Sunday . . .
I predicted a Jets win
And they lost.
So the sky is falling.
And if you heard the post-game presser, there were quite a few people pushing a quarterback controversy – peppering Todd Bowles with Geno Smith questions.
Do they really believe that putting in Geno Smith at this juncture, is going to point this team in the right direction?
Or are these people just pushing that narrative because it’s easy to write?
I think it’s a ridiculous notion.
Don’t get me wrong, Fitzpatrick didn’t have a very good game today.
But how do you think Geno Smith would have fared with J.J. Watt breathing down his throat every other play?
And then you had two very catchable deep balls to Brandon Marshall and Devin Smith dropped.
While on the topic of Smith, I need to say something else.
I tweeted this before, so some might have seen it, but when the Texans PR department handed out the list of inactives, and I saw Kenbrell Thompkins inactive, I was like, “whoa, what’s up with that?”
And Devin Smith was active.
Thompkins is polished, experienced professional receiver who got great training in New England under Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and company. He’s rock solid. Fitz loves him.
Look, I understand that with Quincy Enunwa back, one of the other receivers was likely going to be inactive.
So the Jets went the political route, the PR route – go with the draft pick, like the previous regime was wont to do.
Smith is very, very raw. He needs work on his route-running, strength and so forth. I’m not writing him, but what is their rush with him? Let him get his bleep together.
Thompkins could have helped them more today than Smith. With all the double teams Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker were facing, Thompkins could have had a field day as a third option.
Are they worried about how the media will react if Smith was inactive? Who cares?
Really bad decision, and I’m not second-guessing. This was my reaction when I saw the inactive sheet.
C’mon Todd, you are better than that – play the best players – don’t worry about anything else.
Just like this mindset is a little askew, the thinking Todd and other coaches have about Darrelle Revis is a little off. You don’t just put him on an island every week against the other team’s best receiver.
This isn’t 2008-2009. He doesn’t run as fast, and doesn’t have the same quick twitch.
You can’t just put him out there against DeAndre Hopkins and think everything is going to be okay.
I tweeted on November 18, “DeAndre Hopkins (knee) didn’t practice. Not sure of his status for Sunday, but not a great matchup for Revis. Very quick in-and-out of cuts.”
Then I tweeted, “Jets shouldn’t just put Revis on every #1 receiver. Some are good matchups for him, some are not. They should mix and match depending on guy.”
I’m not mentioning these tweets to toot my own horn. Not at all.
What I’m saying is, if I know this, why wouldn’t people paid to pick players and coach them?
Stop living in a dream land.
He’s not the same player, and if you are going to have him cover a guy like Hopkins, how about some safety help over the top?
Like I wrote in the latest issue in JC Magazine, in the near future Revis should move to safety, like Charles Woodson did. I think he’d be great there, and his lost step won’t matter as much.
Also, it’s a big mistake to start two corners who has both 30 or older, especially when both have lost some speed and quickness. One maybe, going with two, you are borrowing trouble.
And Cromartie returning kicks? What’s up with that? Once again, not second-guessing because I wrote it the other day – he can’t change directions smoothly because of his long-legged gait. So unless there is a huge initial hole he can run through, the return is over.
Bowles and Mr. Coffee needed to have a long meeting and say to each other, “No bullbleep, let’s deal with reality with every player on our roster, regardless of draft status.”
No more sugar-coating things.
