There is a “sky is falling” element to this narrative that I’m not buying. If you’re not paying attention, just admit it, and handle things accordingly . . .
It doesn’t look like Breno Giacomini is going to be ready for the opener.
His back still isn’t ready to play football. The injury was suffered in mini-camp and it’s still a problem. It’s better, but it’s still a problem.
So today, Todd Bowles was asked by a reporter if they are looking around for a replacement who can start the opener.
In other words, look for somebody outside the building.
Somebody just tweeted the name Will Beatty, the former Football Giant.
The way this story is being covered has me baffled.
I watched the entire training camp. I didn’t miss a practice.
I’m not saying this to get a ribbon, but to make a point.
Brent Qvale and Ben Ijalana platooned at the right tackle spot throughout camp.
I thought they both looked really good.
In fact, to me the dilemma isn’t do the Jets have a solid replacement for Giacomini, but instead who do you go with, Qvale or Ijalana. They both looked like starting quality right tackles to me.
I’ve mentioned this before. The problem with the coverage of this story is reporters aren’t watching the line play much in practice.
I’m not criticizing people, just telling you how it works. They are mainly looking at the throwing and catching.
So some of the people acting like “the sky is falling” in Florham Park because of the Giacomini’s injury, are likely not watching the line play in practice closely.
Now if you said to me Brandon Shell was going to replace Giacomini, that would be a problem. He has a lot of potential, but he’s a project who had an up-and-down camp.
I just think it’s ridiculous for people to push a narrative when they clearly weren’t paying close attention.
Honestly, I don’t think there is a big drop-off or any drop-off from Giacomini to one of these guys, who were both trained really well the last year by Steve Marshall, and the year before by that by Mike Devlin.
They both seem ready for the challenge. Both guys are technically-sound and very smart. I’m telling you, there weren’t a lot of issues on the right side in camp with either Qvale or Ijalana manning the position.
And keep in mind, Giacomini was very inconsistent last year. So they are replacing somebody who was play was very uneven last year.
So when people take an elitist attitude about the situation, like neither can handle the job, and they need to go outside the building, keep in mind, many weren’t focused on line play in camp.
They were looking at the throwing and catching, which is a lot more interesting to them, and probably to a lot of people in their audience.
But as someone who was focusing on the line closely, I think the Jets will be fine.
And remember, the Jets have one of the better blocking tight ends in football (another fact that is often ignored since people are obsessed with the limited catches at the position). Kellen Davis is a superb blocking tight end. He was last year, and has been in camp.
So if the right tackles need help, he will be lined-up over there.
I think the potential problems on the right side are being embellished a little.
