Ulbrich needs to move on the failed slogans of the past . . .

Getting an opportunity to be an NFL head coach is rare, even on an interim basis.

So in the next seven games, even if they are his last as an NFL head coach, Jeff Ulbrich needs to do it his way – go for broke.

Stop leaning on things from the past that didn’t work at 1 Jets Drive.

Stop worrying so much about “straining” on defense, and focus more on instincts and being assignment savvy.

Enough of the “strain” rhetoric we have heard over the last 3-plus years. Guys might be straining, but the other team is gaining, because players are constantly out of position, running around like their hair is on fire. The Jets need less gas and more brakes on defense so they stop running past plays.

Stop calling players “elite human beings.” Jets fans are tired of that and heard enough of that in the last 3-plus years. They want “elite football players” who play smart football, they don’t need the Dalai Lama.

Enough of the “superpower” stuff. What good is a player whose superpower is hitting hard if he is constantly out of position? If a player doesn’t have good instincts, other superpowers are useless.

Drop all over the semantics of the previous regime that didn’t work. Turn the page.

Be your own man. Be that tough-as-hell linebacker, who had a mohawk, who was a heck of a player for the San Francisco 49ers.

You know what good defense is supposed to look like, and it ain’t this.

If guys consistently screw up, put their butts on the bench, maybe even cut some guys.

Stop carrying on the defiant loyalty of the last 3-plus years that seemed to ignore the film in favor of not hurting people’s feelings by benching them.

Jeff, while it’s a long shot, you have seven games to prove to the Jets (and the rest of football), that you are head-coaching material.

Don’t rely on catchphrases and philosophies that led to much losing.

To paraphrase Frank Sinatra – “Do it your way.”
