I don’t want to belabor the point. The Jets did the right thing. But some of the stuff going on today is a tad bit revisionist.
The Jets social media department can be unctuous at times.
They had the following four messages on top of Revis’ photos on Facebook, and below each, fans had They have been pouring on the praise of Revis the last 24 hours. They can be a bit much at times. I’m not talking about the writers for their website. I’m talking about Twitter and Facebook and social media platforms like that. They had photos of Revis today on Facebook with worded messages above each picture. Let me show you what I’m talking about it.
Meme #1 – “Nothing but respect.”
Fan Anthony Valentin responded, “So we gone act like he didn’t pull two holdouts like a spoiled brat, split for the division rival to chase a ring and then completely quit on himself and his team the second he got the big contract.”
Meme #2 – “Legend.”
Fan Dave Raponi responded – “This is the reason why the Pats are winners and the Jets are losers . Belichick knows when a player is on the down side of his career and gets rid of them bf it happens . He got Revis one last good year out of him and lets him go. The Jets picked up a player who was no longer at top of his game and over pay for him.”
Meme #3 – “His home will always be here.”
Fan Billy Louis responded, “Thanks for showing up last season out of shape and going out of your way to not make contact with anyone. I can’t imagine all the preparation that must have taken.”
Meme #4 – “The greatest.”
Christopher King responded – “The greatest at being selfish, he defined the term hold out , me first player. Not sorry to see you him go. Had no passion, and was afraid to tackle.”
I will be the first to say some fans can be obnoxious on social media. It comes with the territory. But these responses are dead-on, and I think this series of photos with these messages seemed a little tone-deaf to me.
I agree with everything the fans said.
Look, I’m not expecting the Jets to rip him on his way out the door, but put out a press release wishing him luck with some nice words, and move on. He was awful the last two years, and directly impacted the results of games, like the game in Houston in 2015 that Brandon Marshall ripped him for. There is this false narrative that was he was good in 2015. He wasn’t. He was bad, just not as bad as 2016.
Look, I’m no expert on social media, but I’m telling you, the Jets need to tweak their approach. They are really pissing off a lot of fans with their social media stuff, on almost a daily basis. They are too in-your-face for a team that was pretty bad last year. They need to low-key it a little.
And this Revis stuff today is a perfect example of why they need to tweak their approach. Do they think the fans didn’t witness Revis making a fortune the last two years and playing very poorly?
C’mon guys.
