Perhaps he made what’s called
a “business decision.”
Talking about safety Bradley McDougald’s tackle attempt on Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor at the goal line on a 1-yard rushing score.
He went low instead of high.
For those who saw the Jets’ post-game show, Bart Scott went after McDougald hard.
The Jets lost something in run support in the transition from Jamal Adams to McDougald, not anything in pass coverage.
By the way, Seattle’s pass defense has been pretty bad this year – Atlanta, New England and Dallas all lit them up.
Adams is what he is – very good in run support and as a blitzer, but pedestrian in coverage.
And now he’s hurt. He left the Dallas’ game with a groin injury. This is another reason you have to be careful paying safeties big money – they get hurt a lot due to the brutal nature of the position – Eric Berry, Bob Saunders, Malik Hooker et al.
Also on the Taylor TD run, Henry Anderson was pancaked by the center.
NFL teams often use what are called “jumbo” packages on the goal line to stop the run. Why would you have 6-6, 295-pound, with a lean build for his position, in the middle of the line on the goal line? He’s not what I would consider a “jumbo” package defensive linemen.
So the Colts ran into a big hole thanks to McDougald’s decision and Anderson getting pancaked . . .
Christopher Johnson might have made a mistake with his focus in his last coaching search.
It seems like he wanted to hire a coach who could take Sam Darnold to the next level.
You probably should not conduct a coaching search with one player in mind. What you should do, is go out and hire the best coach you can find for the entire team, not make it so focused on one position.
You hire the best coach possible, and then he can hire a great staff, including an elite offensive coordinator and QB coach, and they can deal with the QB and the offense.
To hire a head coach with so much of a focus on one guy, is probably misguided.
If the Jets make a coaching change, which I’m not suggesting (I don’t fire people in print), the next coach needs to be the best football coach available, a tremendous leader of men, to lead the 53 man roster, not to take the QB to the next level.
And if they make a change, the head coach should be picked by Joe Douglas, with perhaps the assistance of Phil Savage, and not by business people . . .
The last two games, Sam Darnold’s two touchdown passes, one in each game, were street-yard broken plays, both to throws to Braxton Berrios.
They were both impressive plays.
But you also have to win from the pocket in the NFL, and the Jets aren’t doing that enough, whether you want to blame Adam Gase or Sam Darnold, it’s a problem.
Look at Phillip Rivers yesterday.
There is nothing wrong with street-yard ball at times, but it’s hard to sustain consistent drives with that approach.
The Jets need to have more success in the pocket at the QB position moving forward.
Blame who you want, but this needs to improve.
