On January 11, 2023, Woody Johnson fired Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur. On Sunday, he was named the Arizona Cardinals’ head coach.
On October 8, 2024, Johnson fired Jets head coach Robert Saleh. On January 22, 2026, he was hired as the Tennessee Titans’ head coach.
I don’t mean this as a gotcha post, but just pointing out that now these two men are two of 32 men in the world who are NFL head coaches.
Time will tell if either one of these hires works out, and it should be pointed out that the Cardinals and Titans don’t have the greatest track records at hiring coaches.
And after many years of dubious head coaching hires, the Titans finally got it right with Mike Vrabel, but the owner fired him in 2023, choosing GM Ran Carthon in a power struggle. Carthon was fired a year later. Vrabel will be coaching the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl on Sunday.
Look, it might not mean a darn thing that Saleh and LaFleur got hired as head coaches in such short order, just throwing it out there.
You could argue that one reason so many coaches come and go with the Jets is a culture that needs to be fixed.
They tried to do this by offering buyouts to 170 of 250 employees last year. That was about a year ago. So far, it’s hard to see any tangible cultural improvement. Maybe it will happen this year.
Nathaniel Hackett, who was run out of Florham Park, essentially tarred and feathered while he coached for Gang Green’s offensive coordinator, just got hired as the Miami Dolphins QB coach.
Hackett was hired as the Jets’ offensive coordinator on January 28, 2023, and five games into the 2024 season, was stripped of his play-calling responsibilities by Johnson in favor of Todd Downing.
The Jets just fired eight assistant coaches over the last couple of weeks, mostly on defense.
Perhaps this has been a tough place to work and be successful, for whatever reason.
We will see if Aaron Glenn can change that moving forward.
The Jets need more stability.
1 Jets Drive has to stop turning into a bus station for coaches, head coaches, and assistant coaches.
It’s hard to be successful with all this constant turnover.
Look at the Pittsburgh Steelers with three head coaches from 1991 to 2025.
Great continuity.
It’s not great for players to keep having new coaches all the time, new playbooks, schemes, and position coaches teaching them different techniques.
The Jets have got to find a way to stabilize their football operation
The winds of change have blown through Florham Park too often, and before that, Hempstead.
Time to look in the mirror and figure out why they have to keep starting over all the time.
Seeing Saleh, LaFleur, Hackett and now Tanner Engstrand (hired by Atlanta) getting hired all within the last week, should lead to an epiphany at 1 Jets Drive that this has to stop.
Like do you really think all these Jets defensive coaches just fired are bad coaches?
Is defensive line coach Eric Washington a bad coach?
I would say – no. He’s been in the league a long time.
Time for things to change.
The churning of coaches needs to stop.
