Dan checks in with more combine and free agents notes, including a sleeper wide receiver in the draft the Jets have their eye on . . .
Nevada’s Dontay Moch set a defensive end combine record by running a 4.44 forty.
Should the Jets consider him at 30?
That might be a little high, and they might be gun shy about picking a workout warrior at the combine. Vernon Gholston was a workout star at the combine, and that pick didn’t work out that well for the Jets.
Moch did have 30 sacks for the Wolfpack, so he’s not just a workout warrior, but like we saw with Kyle Wilson last year, you have to be careful with guys that star in the WAC Conference – the level of competition is average.
I’m not saying Wilson won’t turn into a good player. I’m just saying it’s a huge leap from the conference to the NFL.
Moch is probably a better fit for the second-fourth rounds. He reminds me of FIU’s Antwan Barnes, who also lit up the combine running under 4.5, but went in the fourth round to the Baltimore Ravens four years ago.
Obviously, the Jets don’t have a second round pick. That pick will go to San Diego, thanks to the Antonio Cromartie trade . . .
Speaking of Cromartie, a few weeks ago he got a little ticked off at the reports he might be on the outs with the Jets. People took a story by NFL.com’s Mike Lombardi, stating the Jets might look to take care of Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards before Cromartie.
Even if that story is 100 percent accurate, it by no means meant that Cromartie was departing. People took the story the wrong way.
After giving up a 2010 second round pick for Cro, they aren’t going to let him walk after one year, especially after he did play well last year.
Like I wrote in the last issue of Jets Confidential Magazine, “Cro” did a good job last year with a pedestrian pass rush, so can you imagine what he and Revis could do as a duo with a top-shelf pass rush?
I can’t tell you what “Cro” can do with a great pass rush – 10 picks and a Pro Bowl, like he did in 2007 with San Diego, with Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips at the top of their games.
The clearly need to do something to take their pass rush to the next level . . .
The buzz at the combine continued to be that Holmes is the Jets’ top priority. If the Jets sign Holmes, but for some reason can’t bring back Edwards, they might look to add another receiver high in the draft.
The big names at wide receiver in the draft are Julio Jones and A.J. Green, but they will be long gone with the Jets pick at 30. Also, it’s unlikely the Jets will pick a receiver in the first round.
But I hear they really like a receiver who will likely go in the middle-late rounds – Florida Atlantic’s Lester Jean.
The talented Haitian is a 6-3, 215-pounder had 63 catches this year, even though he was double-teamed every week . . .
With the release of Damien Woody, and the uncertain future of Rob Turner (tendered with no draft compensation needed to sign him), Baylor guard Danny Watkins could make a lot of sense. He fits in around 30 . . .
