NFL VP of officiating Dean Blandino appeared on NFL Network to discuss the penalty called on Chris Jones in overtime on a missed Jets field goal attempt.
“This is an example of the new rule change for 2013 season that prohibits defensive players from pushing teammates into the offensive formation,” Blandino said on NFL Network. “When you look at the play, you can see New England No. 94 (Jones) pushing New England No. 74 (Will Svitek) into the (offensive) formation. That’s a violation of the rule.
“It was put in for player safety and it is the correct call.
“We’ve seen it before and it hasn’t been called. This is the first time it’s been called.”
