NFL Network commentator Adam Rank predicted that the Jets will go 10-7 this season.
Look, I have no idea what their record is going to be this season, and I’m not going to make a prediction, but I want to break down what he said leading into his prediction.
“The Jets won five games last season – change at the top – Aaron Glenn is coming in to lead this team,” Rank said. “Everyone talks about Ben Johnson. Aaron Glenn is a great coach. I’m excited to see what he’s going to be doing with the Jets team. I’m excited to see what Justin Fields is going to be able to do when he’s given a full opportunity.”
While I’m not going to predict a record, I will say that 10-7 is not out of the question, if the formula works.
The Philadelphia Eagles formula.
Dominate the trenches on both sides of the ball, and have a top-five rushing offense (with a top-shelf O-Line on paper, including the man pictured above), creating easy throws for the QB, along with a lot of QB runs, either designed scrambles, or RPOs.
If they can execute this formula, there is no reason why they can’t go 10-7.
But that is a big “if.”
As for his assertion, the Jets will surprise the world with a 10-7 record this year because “Aaron Glenn is a great coach,” well, that remains to be seen.
I’m talking about it as a “head” coach.
Nobody can say he’s a great “head” coach yet. He was a good secondary coach and defensive coordinator, but is stepping into a new world as a head coach.
The same with Ben Johnson, who Rank also brought up, who is going from Detroit Lions offensive coordinator to Chicago Bears head coach. We have no idea how he will do as a head coach.
Glenn looks like a great leader of men for sure, but let’s see how he’ll do as a head coach as far as managing the game and X’s and O’s.
Jury is out on that stuff.
So, as we sit here right now, it’s hard to say that one reason the Jets will go 10-7 is because Glenn is a great coach. It could very well turn out to be the case, but since he hasn’t coached one game as a head coach, how could we possibly know that?
As for the narrative that Rank is subscribing to, and he’s not alone, that now Fields will be “given a full opportunity,” that is certainly a chicken or the egg scenario.
Were the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers holding Fields back with very conservative playing calling, cramping his style, or were they doing what they felt they had to do based on perceived issues going through progressions?
Some would argue that the Bears and Steelers had no choice; others would argue that both teams put a ball and chain around Fields’ ankle with their ultra-conservative offensive approaches with him under center.
We will certainly find out what Fields can do this year with the shackles taken off, which Glenn has hinted repeatedly he’s going to do.
Look, the league doesn’t have a lot of great teams, so if the Jets can manufacture production on offense, accentuating Fields’ skill set, and play great defense under a head coach who made his bones on that side of the ball, 10-7 certainly isn’t out of the question.
