While people are quick to criticize Jets QB Justin Fields for his play this season, maybe the problem is more of a scouting issue.
Former Jets executive Pat Kirwan, now a host on SiriusXM NFL Radio, feels the former Ohio State QB should have switched positions on the NFL level.
“I have no ill-feelings for him – he’s a nice kid,” Kirwan said on NFL Radio on Friday. “He might have been a running back in the world I came from (scouting), or some type of athlete (wide receiver). Some guys came into the league as a quarterback and became other things – a great one in Pittsburgh (Hines Ward). He was a quarterback at Georgia and became a very good receiver. I would have found a spot because Justin is one of my best athletes, but he’s not a quarterback.”
How much more film do teams need to see before they realize this?
“Justin’s been around a while now, and he’s not demonstrating he’s an NFL quarterback – he’s demonstrating all the time he’s an athlete, and his formula for performance is not a winning formula – it’s a nice run around formula,” Kirwan said.
“We are on a lot of teams that have taken a shot, one was for two years, $40 million to take a good look at this.”
Kirwan added, “We keep talking about this athletic ability. So what? It’s not quarterback ability, and there is a huge difference.”
So it might be time for a position change, and perhaps that should have happened four years ago, when he entered the league.
