The Jets picking Omar Cooper at the end of the first round wasn’t a need pick.
It was a smart pick from a value standpoint, and he will help them a great deal, but despite what the fantasy football crowd was telling you, it was not a need pick.
Why?
Because they already had a terrific slot receiver in Isaiah Williams, who shined in Tuesday’s practice, including a great catch at the end of the session on a deep pass.
“He’s a dude – he’s a dude,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said about Williams, the team’s MVP last season. “And it’s not just the catches. If you go out there and watch practice. Just watch how he blocks. Just watch how he competes. Obviously, we know what he’s going to do when it comes to special teams, but on offense, just watch how he operates. He’s a dude.”
So if they had Garrett Wilson and Adonai Mitchell on the outside, and Williams in the slot, why were so many people pounding the drum for them to pick a WR in the first round?
Once again, picking Cooper, at 30, after trading up a few slots, made perfect sense. He’s a heck of a football player, and where they picked him made a lot of sense from a value board standpoint. He will help them a lot.
But the people who were shouting from the rooftops that WR was a big need for the Jets in the draft just weren’t paying close attention to how Williams played at receiver last year when given a chance.
