New Jersey – The Jets locked up pass rusher Antwan Barnes today. Also Tampa Bay could be ready to up the offer for Revis. Let’s get this started . . .
The Jets signed OLB Antwan Barnes today. So what are they getting?
A journeyman role player, and I don’t mean that as a negative.
He’s 28, and has had stops in Baltimore, Philadelphia and San Diego.
He’s best used as a situational pass rusher and special team’s player.
He’s got great straight-line speed, and can help a pass rush.
However, he’s not a full-time, starting linebacker because he’s average dropping into coverage, and his instincts are pedestrian.
But he’s a good guy to have on a team – he’s fast and tough and can do a few different things for you.
But he’s not a starting 3-4 OLB . . .
I don’t know if you all saw this, but Rick Stroud, the top Tampa Bay Buc’s beat writer, reported today, that the team he covers, hasn’t ruled out including their 2013 first round pick in a Darrelle Revis’ trade.
That changes a lot. Up to this point, it seemed like they were dead-set against including that pick. That position seems to be changing.
If Tampa Bay throws in that pick (along with one or two other picks), this deal could get done.
If the Jets get that pick, they will have the 9th and 13th picks of the draft – that would really help their retooling process (they aren’t rebuilding, they are retooling).
Think about the tag-team that could reel-in with the 9th and 13th picks. Here is a combo to consider – pass rusher Barkevious Mingo (LSU) at nine, and guard Chance Warmack (Alabama) at 13.
The bottom line, with nine and 13, they can get two potential impact starters, something that would greatly assist them moving forward . . .
Honestly, Woody Johnson should probably let his coach and GM talk about the roster. Johnson’s background is more on the business side.
I don’t mean that to be disrespectful, I just think it’s the best approach.
Johnson said today about Mark Sanchez, “We’ll see some changes that will make it lot easier for Mark. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Mark yet”
That is a bizarre statement. Woody, you are now on your third offensive coordinator trying to turn this guy around first Schotty, then Tony, and now Marty.
Considering how much Mark inherently struggles reading defenses and with his accuracy, how can you say, “I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Mark yet?”
And when Johnson makes statements like that, the perception among many fans and reporters is that he’s still chasing the money, trying to get bang for his buck, on the two massive contracts that Sanchez got.
Woody and Rex need to stop all this spin when it comes to Sanchez.
Most fans don’t want to hear it anymore.
Let Mark compete for the starting job with David Garrard and Greg McElroy, and may the best man win.
Woody isn’t helping his brand (which isn’t in a good spot right now, and the Jets’ brass knows it), by trying to promote up Sanchez. Right now, that is bad for business.
