Florham Park – Teams talk about competition, but often it’s window dressing.
Let’s be honest: With many teams, most roster and depth chart decisions are made before training camp starts.
But coming off a 3-14 season, perhaps this is a time in Jets history to throw away the anointing oil and have true open competitions at almost every position.
Confirmation bias has never won anything, so just keep the best players and start the best players, regardless of where they were picked or how much money they make.
Over the last few years, there has been too much rolling with players too long who clearly were not getting the job done.
There was a defensive lineman whom the last two regimes kept starting regardless of the film.
He is not with the team anymore, signing elsewhere this off-season, but it seemed like you would’ve needed an Act of Congress to get him off the field during his time in Florham Park.
It’s time for a true meritocracy to emerge on the field at 1 Jets Drive.
Keep the best 53, start the best 22, and if somebody repeatedly isn’t getting the job done, get their butt off the field and stop rolling with them ad infinitum.
Pretty simple plan, don’t you think?
If the Jets hope to turn things around, they must embrace this approach.
